Canada Place, a Vancouver icon, is renownedly recognized for its fabric roof designed to mimic large panoramic sails. Along with being home to the Pan Pacific Hotel, it’s the starting point for many travellers ready to set a course to Alaska. As the main cruise ship passenger terminal for the region, with over 300 vessels visiting a year, all elements of the facilities’ operations must be running at top efficiency.

Before the start of the project in 2017, The Port of Vancouver began connecting with electrical contractors to propose their solutions for retrofitting the lighting and lighting controls systems for two of the key levels within the facility — the 4,000 level and the 10,000 level. The port’s criteria included:

  • A robust controls system with the ability to enable Bluetooth Asset Tracking and Heat Mapping
  • Retrofitting from fluorescent luminaries to LED, maximizing energy efficiency and reducing electrical costs
  • Maintain a uniform fixture appearance across the two levels

Thrive Electrify, known for their proven track record in reducing or eliminating energy waste through sustainable energy solutions, was 1 of 3 contractors called upon to propose a comprehensive solution. Asked to combine strengths, Mac’s II Agencies partnered with Thrive to achieve and exceed the requested call. At the time of the bid, Mac’s II Agencies was the only agent within BC that represented a manufacturer which could provide a single style of a fixture in various sizes that also incorporates built-in sensors. As the awarded team, we re-evaluated the lighting layouts, reducing the number of fixtures needed by 40% thereby causing the project to come well under budget while achieving the highest energy savings possible.

The Bridge from Cooper Lighting Solutions: Corelite was the primary luminaire featured throughout both levels of the retrofit. Along with being available in various sizes, ensuring a cohesive appearance throughout the floors, the marquee benefit of these fixtures lies in their performance. Being an indirect light source that utilizes WaveStream™ optics, results in a high-lumen output without the uncomfortable visual glare traditional troffers omit. As a bonus, The Bridge can support air return via perforated holes that run down the edge of the fixture, allowing continuous air circulation back and forth from the plenum.

The 10,000 level of Canada Place is considered a high-security area, as it is the main passage for upwards of 900,000 passengers to pass through border customs each year. Using partitions, this area is never arranged the same way twice, which made it crucial for operations to have a robust controls lighting system. Cooper Lighting Solution: Controls integrates heat mapping technology, allowing facility operators to remotely understand where lighting level adjustments are needed. With the added integration of Bluetooth Asset Tracking, the crew can quickly locate tagged equipment down to a specific corner within a room.

Since project completion in 2019, The Port of Vancouver has reported less than a 1% failure rate on fixture deficiencies, which are 100% covered with the opted-in extended warranty package.
