Overview
Emily Carr University (ECU), recognized as a world leader in art, media and design, broke ground on a new 286,000 sqft state-of-the-art campus in Vancouver, in 2015. Summer of 2017 the new facility, affectionately known as the Great Northern Way Campus, opened its doors and continues to serve over 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Being Canada’s most intensive research-focused university in the creative field, meant that the indoor and outdoor luminaries used throughout the grounds needed to meet a high level of criteria.
In coordination with E.B. Horsman & Son, WSP and Houle Electric, Mac’s II Agencies lighting division worked closely with all parties to achieve the desired illumination experience — visually captivating modern fixtures, powerful CRI (Colour Rendering Index) and strategic forethought into directing the light.
Cooper Lighting Solutions, Contech Lighting, Finelite, Visa Lighting and AimLite were also utilized throughout the campus for their high-quality illumination and finishes. Cooper Lighting Solutions Invue ARB Arbor Post Tops are prime examples; on top of providing precise illumination for the exterior of the building, they also deliver a visual impact which was inspired by organic design.
Houle Electric, the design-assist partner of the Gold LEED-certified campus, was awarded the VCRA (Vancouver Regional Construction Association) Silver Award of Excellence in 2018; an award that recognizes innovative techniques, new materials and/or exceptional project management. Known for honouring outstanding BC lighting designers, the IESBC (Illuminating Engineering Society of British Columbia) 2018 Vision Awards granted WSP an Award of Merit on the project too.
Integrated throughout the exterior and interior, experience thoughtful lighting that amplifies and supports creativity throughout the campus.
