COAST Ocean Innovation Hub, designed to foster innovation for the betterment of BC’s ocean economy, is a 7,000 sqft collaborative and flexible workspace that unites forward-thinking professionals in a dynamic environment, driving collaboration and industry growth.

The lighting design, developed by Adam Carnwell from Mac’s II Agencies, plays a pivotal role in enhancing the adaptability and expansive feel of the space. While working collaboratively with Sawyer Construction and Western Design+Build, we meticulously crafted the lighting package to balance the integration of varying ceiling heights, raw cedar structures, and industrial elements, ensuring both visual appeal and functionality.

Pavo 4” from SPI Lighting, were strategically suspended throughout the open-concept entryway, preserving open sight-lines while creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. These long cylindrical pendants add depth and facilitate an elegant transition into the collaborative workspace. In the mezzanine, where lower ceiling heights posed a challenge, slim linear luminaires from Above All were suspended between deep wooden beams, maintaining a sense of openness without encroaching on headroom.

A standout feature of the design is the oversized Novato Ring luminaires from SPI Lighting, with the largest measuring 120″ in diameter. These striking pendants seamlessly frame the expansive ceiling fans, visually unifying the open space while delivering balanced, ambient illumination that complements the architectural form.

In the multipurpose podcasting room, BL Lighting’s neonVIEW series was incorporated, enabling colour-changing capabilities that enhance the linear acoustic paneling. This thoughtful approach not only adds character but also supports the room’s dynamic use. The RGBW luminaires are managed via an intuitive platform, while other areas employ straightforward dimmers and switches, ensuring ease of use without compromising the design’s aesthetic integrity.

The lighting design was meticulously crafted to minimize glare and cultivate a bright, uplifting environment that enhances productivity. By harmonizing modern lighting solutions with natural materials and a flexible design, COAST Ocean Innovation Hub fosters collaboration, drives innovation, and strengthens the growing community it serves.
