Overview
The Aboriginal Housing Society of Prince George’s (AHSPG) recent renovation of their head office is a testament to their ongoing commitment to providing safe, healthy, and affordable housing for Aboriginal people of all backgrounds. More than just a place to live, their spaces are designed to foster community, culture, and a deep sense of belonging.
At the heart of this project is the Storytelling Room, an immersive space designed by interior designer Valerie Potvin to evoke the essence of a traditional teepee. Thoughtfully crafted lighting surrounds occupants with warmth and unity, while a breathtaking northern lights effect, achieved with BL Lighting’s neonVIEW Pixel Side SI, enhances the experience. The neonVIEW’s unique vertical bending capability made it the ideal choice for this circular space, allowing it to contour seamlessly to the room’s shape. This flexible tape light provides expressive motion, chase, and pixel effects that go beyond traditional RGBW colour changing, creating dynamic, mesmerizing Northern Lights animations. BL Lighting played a key role in refining the visual effects, ensuring that everyone who enters feels embraced by both tradition and innovation.
In the Gathering Hall, lighting from Liteline was strategically implemented to maintain an expansive, airy atmosphere. Liteline’s LED Powertape, embedded in the structural metal beams, acting as an uplight to enhance the feeling of openness. Additionally, A-Line track was suspended to provide flexible task lighting where and when it’s needed most. The blank walls were wall washed with 35W LED Architectural Track Heads to provide a backdrop for future art installations, allowing the space to evolve and reflect the vibrant stories of the community. Designed for versatility, the hall balances functionality with aesthetic appeal, making it a welcoming venue for a variety of community activities.
Throughout the facility’s T-bar system, a combination of Cruze by Cooper Lighting Solutions: Metalux and Edge from Liteline was used to deliver a clean, modern look while ensuring optimal ambient illumination. Adding an artistic touch, the reception areas feature pendant-mounted Cymbal fixtures by Modern Forms. These striking luminaires resonate like a vibrant note, casting an elegant halo of light.
The lighting design for the Aboriginal Housing Society of Prince George successfully marries cultural representation with contemporary design, creating a space that is not only visually stunning but also deeply meaningful to the community it serves.
