Overview
In the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre, the gallery experience is meant to feel quiet and intentional. The artwork sets the mood, and the lighting’s job is to support and compliment it, not compete with it.
This upgrade modernized the space to current-generation LED lighting, delivering consistent, high-quality illumination with better controlled beam placement and dependable colour from one exhibit to the next. Just as important, the system was chosen to stay flexible—easy to adjust as artwork, mediums, and layouts change, without requiring a full lighting rework.
That intent shaped the design approach:
- Precision where it matters: controlled light aimed onto the artwork to reduce distractions and keep focus on the display.
- Modularity for a changing gallery: fixtures that can be repositioned and re-aimed as exhibits rotate without needing an electrician.
- A calm ceiling line: a clean, cohesive look that doesn’t pull attention away from the gallery walls.
Liteline’s track system was selected because it offered the broadest range of options for modular control, multiple light outputs, and future-ready flexibility, with the added confidence of working with a local Canadian manufacturer.
The installation features Liteline’s ATK Series track paired with FLEX track heads, delivered in a black finish that visually recedes into the deep grey ceiling. The result is a “quiet” lighting presence that blends into the architecture while providing the adjustability a gallery needs, with 80 track heads spanning the space and close to 200 ft of track installed to maximize layout flexibility.
Like most projects with moving parts, this one came with a logistical hiccup: freight delays that sat outside the team’s control. With close coordination between Liteline, the freight company, and the Mac’s II Agencies expert project coordination team, the issue was resolved in a timely manner.
A key success factor was the collaboration between the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) and the electrical contractor, Surepoint Electric. Surepoint played a critical role by helping coordinate meetings and samples with the CVRD, which ultimately supported the decision to move forward with the Liteline track system.
With a modular track lighting platform in place, the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre now has a lighting foundation that can keep pace with the gallery’s programming. The space can shift, the art can change, and the lighting can follow—precisely, quietly, and confidently.
