North Cowichan Duncan RCMP Civic Building BC

North Cowichan, BC North Cowichan + Duncan RCMP: Civic Building

Overview

The newly constructed North Cowichan / Duncan RCMP Civic Building meets the growing needs of the community by offering a modern space for enhanced public safety. Originally built in the 1980s to accommodate 40 employees, the previous detachment had become too small, prompting the construction of this new three-storey facility. Mac’s II Agencies worked closely with Smith + Andersen and Houle Electric to specify nearly the entire lighting package, selecting every fixture to meet the building’s unique needs.

The outdoor and interior lighting design was fully specified by Mac’s II Agencies, featuring top brands like Cooper Lighting Solutions, WAC Lighting, Axis Lighting, and Ligman Lighting USA. From small accent lights to task and decorative lighting, this project encompassed a full range of lighting solutions.

On the exterior, Ligman Lighting USA’s Lightsoft bollards were chosen for their precise downward lighting, providing wide bursts of illumination where needed most. Along the exterior walls, Cooper Lighting Solutions’ McGraw-Edison GWC Galleon Wall pack LEDs ensure added security, lighting darker areas for enhanced safety. The exterior lighting not only serves a practical purpose but beautifully highlights the building’s clean architectural design after dark.

Inside, the building features a variety of suspended and recessed linear lighting. Brands like Cooper Lighting Solutions’ NeoRay, PMC Lighting, and Axis Lighting were selected to meet specific visual and functional needs throughout the interior spaces. Cooper Lighting Solutions’ Corelite Continua is particularly noteworthy, featuring an integrated WaveLinx Sensor Endcap that allows for occupant sensing, atomic dimming, and CCT control, offering a smart, adaptive lighting experience.

Breaking the repetition of linear designs, designer lighting elements such as Modern Forms’ YOLO pendant offer a unique aesthetic. The large spun-metal dome, suspended over the kitchen island in the break room, emits a warm ambient light, creating a welcoming and comfortable space for employees to take a moment.

While the luminaire solutions highlighted here showcase only a fraction of the work completed, from exterior safety to interior elegance, the lighting seamlessly integrates with the building’s design, enhancing its modern, cohesive aesthetic.
