Surrey, BC South Surrey Arena

Overview

South Surrey Arena, proud home to minor hockey leagues, figure skaters, Junior A and community members, opened its doors in 1992 and remains one of two Olympic-sized rinks within the Lower Mainland. Located centrally in the South Surrey Athletic Park, the arena sought to upgrade to a sustainable state-of-the-art LED lighting system as part of their 2023 Capital Upgrades project.

Called upon by O’M Engineering, Mac’s II Agencies specifier Nathan Moore presented options for the retrofit project spanning from a simple 1-to-1 swap of their existing fixtures to assembling a quality sports-grade lighting package that allows for an immersive rink experience. Going with the latter, Cooper Lighting Solutions: Ephesus’ system allows skaters and spectators alike to immerse themselves in an elevated game-day and events experiences – transforming every moment on the ice into a showstopping one. While providing a spectacular dynamic light show, the retrofit project has also allowed for:

  • A decrease in the number of fixtures suspended from 72 to a total of 42 Ephesus luminaires — (that’s a 58% less fixtures)
  • A reduction in overall wattage due to the upgraded energy-efficient LED lighting
  • A decrease in yearly maintenance — less lighting downtime and no lamp changeouts

In addition, to providing design assistance, our skilled and talented Lighting Controls Specialist, Brent Nicholson commissioned the controls. Pre-setting scenes like ‘Paparazzi’, a dance of flashing lights, ‘Canada’, colours of Red, White and Red across the ice, and ‘Score’ a flood of colours to match the given home team’s colours, sets the tone for any type of event. Whether pre-set or manually adjusted, the entire system is easily digitally controlled at the push of a button.

The South Surrey Arena’s complete turnkey lighting investment continues to impress the City of Surrey, skaters, players, and spectators alike!
