Richmond, bc YVR: Pier D

Overview

The YVR: Pier D expansion at Vancouver International Airport shines as a testament to innovative lighting design and meticulous execution. From recessed linear solutions in the bathrooms to large-scale rollout of downlighting throughout the new pier, every detail reflects precision and a dedication to creating a visually stunning and functional space.

A standout feature of this project was the intricate lighting design in and around the men’s and women’s washrooms. Outside the washrooms, Cooper Lighting Solutions’ NeoRay Define 3 recessed linear fixtures were elegantly wrapped up the walls and across the ceiling, creating a striking illumination effect that subtly guides travellers toward the entrances. Inside, these same fixtures were used under the soffit above the mirrors in the vanity area, casting a soft, inviting glow that enhances the space. Complementing this is the striking simplicity of the Supernova fixtures by Deltalight. Ceiling-mounted over the hand-washing stations, these circular fixtures—typically arranged in sets of three with a 37-inch diameter—fill the ceiling without distracting from the carefully selected textures and colours of the space.

Throughout the pier, Cooper Lighting Solutions: Portfolio downlights played a crucial role in providing ambient lighting. A mix of over 650 round and square fixtures were used, with most set at a comfortable 3500K neutral white, ensuring a clean, well-lit environment for travellers.

Despite the challenges of executing such a large-scale project during COVID-19, strict protocols, detailed schedules, and close collaboration with the engineers and contractors ensured a smooth installation process. The pandemic’s constraints didn’t compromise the quality of the work or the team’s dedication to excellence.

From start to finish, YVR: Pier D highlights how expertly planned lighting solutions can transform a space. Whether it’s the glow of the washrooms’ vanity areas or the brilliance of downlights guiding travellers to their next destination, this project showcases the perfect balance of design and function.
